Susan Chappell (804-481-2124) will lead a hike at Five Forks Battlefield. We will hike approximately 4-5 miles on a circuit trail.
The Union victory here was the breaking point for Lee's army. No longer able to hold Petersburg and Richmond, the actions that occurred April 2, were the last convulsions of the Siege of Petersburg. Less than a week later, after some hard marching and bitter fighting, the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered at Appomattox Court House. Lunch and tasty Mennonite baked goods can be found at the Route 1 Country Store in Dinwiddie for those who wish to partake.
Meet at the parking area where the 5 roads come together. It is about a quarter mile or less north of the visitors center coming from Dinwiddie. The GPS will take you south on Route 1. Don't do this! Continue on 85S until you get to exit 53, the Dinwiddie exit, take a right on Carson Road until you get to Route 1, take a left at the elementary school, and then a right on Courthouse Road. Courthouse will take you to Five Forks. If you stay on 85S to exit 53, the GPS will pick you up, and you can follow it the rest of the way. Gather by 9:50 a.m.
